What's cool about this?

Most people think that only by making a really big finding (or winning the Nobel price) scientists can get some attention from the public. This statement can't be more far from reality. The audience is way more interested in science and its wrappings that one could think. Not only discoveries, but also development of new instrumentation, new research projects and the challenges of research itself are things that powerfully attract people's curiosity.
Last week we sent a press release about the commissioning of Canaricam. This isn't a new discovery (yet), but just some piece of scientific work, with the glamour of being a new instrument in the world's biggest telescope, the GTC.
Probably the key words were “new” and “big,” but it happened that we got the attention of EFE agency, one of the greatest news agencies in Spanish. They translated and published our release. The consequence: an spreading wider than expected.
